Mission

To improve the quality of life of the people living in Kandy District by modification of risk factors and reduction of disease burden by early detection of communicable disease outbreaks through regular communicable disease surveillance and implementation of prompt control strategies.

Introduction

The Epidemiology Unit is responsible for systematic collection, compilation, analysis, interpretation of data on communicable diseases of health importance and the dissemination of health information on communicable diseases to support decisions making on current and emerging health situations at the local, regional and national levels.

The unit is also responsible for disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, vector surveillance in view of prevention and control of communicable diseases.

The services provided by the Epidemiology Unit include:

- Disease and Vector surveillance.

- Control of communicable disease Outbreaks.

- Monitoring, supervision and evaluation of National Extended Programme of Immunization

- Water Quality Surveillance to ensure provision of safe water.

- Prevention and control of communicable diseases and maintaining hygienic conditions at disaster situations in collaboration with Disaster management unit.

- Compilation and timely Dissemination of Communicable disease information.

To reduce the disease burden of dengue and other impotent vector borne diseases in Kandy.

To carry out collaborative and applied research enhancing control efforts and reduce impact of problematic species.

Provision of advisory and awareness on medically important insects to Government and private institutions and public.

Technical guidance to carry out vector surveillance, susceptibility and efficacy monitoring and control of medically important insects with local and focal interest, aiming to reduce their impact on health and well-being of the community.
